Vegtoberfest 2012 Report and Photos!

Vegtoberfest is Open the Cages Alliance’s annual autumn festival to celebrate and promote compassionate, healthy and sustainable vegan food choices and lifestyles (www.vegtoberfest.com).  The 2nd Annual Vegtoberfest was held on Saturday October 27th, 2012 at Riverside Park in Baltimore, Maryland.  THANK YOU to everyone who attended Vegtoberfest 2012, and to all the wonderful volunteers who helped to spread the word and make it happen!  Based on the head counts from our “greeter” volunteers, 800-900 people attended this year’s Vegtoberfest!

More than 50 exhibitors/vendors set up booths in Riverside Park, including nine vegan food/beverage sellers, and several more vendors who distributed free vegan food samples.  Joseph Gonzales, Staff Dietitian with the Physicians’ Committee for Responsible Medicine, spoke about optimum vegan nutrition.  Demosthenes Maratos, Communications Director for the Sustainability Institute at Molloy College, presented a basic introduction to vegan living, and explained that veganism is about more than just food - it's about withdrawing financial and other support from the exploitation of animals for any reason.  The Riverside Park gazebo served as a stage for our musical performers: Ron Kipling Williams, Georgie Jessup, and Woody Lissauer.  Baltimore Hoop Love demonstrated hula hooping tricks, and got festival-goers of all ages up and hooping!  The Vegtoberfest Kids’ Corner offered arts and crafts projects for kids throughout the festival, and kids "trick-or-treated" for vegan goodies from participating exhibitors.

Eight chefs competed in this year’s Vegan Chili Cook-Off.  Attendees were invited to sample all eight entries and vote for their favorite chili!  Congratulations to winning chef Amanda Berman for her first-place “Loco Cocoa Chili!”

The Indypendent Reader invited us to contribute a write-up and photo essay on Vegtoberfest, which was published online the following Monday: www.tinyurl.com/IndyreaderVegtoberfest2012.  We thank Mark Peters of Mark Peters Photography for volunteering his time and talents!  Full Vegtoberfest photo album: www.tinyurl.com/Vegtoberfest2012FBalbum.

By holding events like Vegtoberfest which are both educational and social in nature, OTCA seeks to make it easier and more fun for everyone to adopt and sustain vegan lifestyles.  Events like Vegtoberfest are part of our mission to foster and support a culture of compassion and justice for all animals.

Vegtoberfest was organized and hosted by Open the Cages Alliance. Thanks for joining us at this family-friendly event!
